4 Messages about French Pronunciation

French Alphabet vs. Sounds. There are 26 scripted letters in the modern French alphabet. But there are at least 38 phonetic sounds in modern French speech. Although English and French have almost identical alphabets, the same characters do not always represent the same sound in both languages.

The French letter 'I' is pronounced more or less like the 'EE' in "fee," but without the Y sound at the end: listen. An 'I' with an accent circonflexe - î - or tréma - ï - ispronounced the same way. This is also true for the letter 'Y' when it's used as a vowel in French.

êis pronounced like an English ehas in get” – the same as if it was èwith a grave accent. “ô” is pronounced roughly like an English “oh” as in “boat” or “close”. It's the same sound found in the French word au.

An alphabet is just a system for writing sounds on paper. ... Russian stays fairlyphonetic because it only shares an alphabet (sort of) with a few highly relatedlanguages. English is still fairly phonetic, but French has imported so many foreign words that written French is only slightly related to spoken French.
